A stunning new house on the clifftop above St Clair beach in Dunedin, designed for an art collector, has caught the eye of the jury in the 2022 NZIA Southern Architecture Awards.

The house has a Norwegian connection – the concept was designed by Saunders Arkitektur, and developed and completed by Bell + Co Architecture in Dunedin.

Bell + Co says the original client brief was for a “sculptural and engaging two-bedroom home, to accommodate her art collection, and her visiting adult daughters”.

The sculptural shape was a design response to the site: “The house curves and twists to capture views across Dunedin, the harbour, peninsula, Saint Clair beach, and out over the Southern Ocean.”

An imposing entry is defined by a door handle commissioned for the home and created by artist Kate Newby. The entry gallery, designed to provide a taste of what’s to come, creates a grand space to display both art and architecture, with a swimming pool visible on one side and a large staircase on the other.

The NZIA jury describes it this way: “The austere aluminium exterior, unrelenting in its formal expression, contains a revelatory interior, tuned to the owner’s visual wit in an equally uncompromising way.

“Every surface, colour and material choice is deliberate, exact, surprising and inspiring.”

The design also provides plenty of connection with the outdoors – there are several terraces that provide sheltered and sunny places, depending on the time of day and wind conditions.

The project also won a Resene Colour Award, with the judges saying the interior is a “mastercalss in colour, with delightful and unexpected combinations throughout”.

“Colours are expressed in a three-dimensional way, wrapping from floors to walls and furniture in bold blocks. The palette changes with the variation in floor level. The result is bright, brave, and perfectly pitched.”
