Chicken Paprikash is a Hungarian dish that is adored by many. If you’re looking for a version of the traditional dish without all the extra fat, you’re in the right place!

This was a lovely Chicken Paprikash recipe was something I featured in a previous 17 Day Diet Cycle 1 Challenge and it was a hit among the members!

Tender white chicken meat covered in yummy paprika-infused sauce surrounded by bell peppers and tomatoes, this lower fat version of the traditional Chicken Paprikash is definitely one you must try!

While this particular recipe may not be an authentic Hungarian Chicken Paprikash, it comes pretty darn close!

Traditional Chicken Paprikash recipes will likely include many of the same ingredients in this recipe. However, many authentic Chicken Paprikash dishes will include cream and of course Hungarian Paprika!

While this recipe doesn’t include those specific recipes, it’s still delicious!

Chicken Paprikash Ingredients

Like I mentioned earlier, more traditional Hungarian Chicken Paprikash recipes call for more fatty ingredients such cream to make the sauce thick and creamy.

While this particular Chicken Paprikash was created for the 17 Day Diet as a lower fat dish, it’s still yummy and one you ought to give a try!

Can I have Chicken Paprikash on the Kickstart Diet?

Yes, you can definitely have this yummy Chicken Paprikash dish while on the 17 Day Kickstart Diet.

You can have this dish starting on the 10-Day Stabilize Scrub Phase when certain dairy is allowed.

If you want to try this recipe starting on day 1, you’ll need to make a minor tweak and you’ll be good to go.

Instead of using sour cream, opt for coconut milk instead (it will change the flavor a bit) or leave it out all together.

Keto Chicken Paprikash

If you’re on the Keto Diet, this dish can be eaten as is.

Depending on your macros, you can certainly make this recipe a bit more authentic. Try these changes:

  • Use butter or lard to fry up your chicken
  • Use dark chicken if you want
  • Add 1/4 cup cream at the end to make this dish even creamier

Chicken Paprikash lightened up for the 17 Day Diet

Ingredients

  • 3 Tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 3 chicken breasts, cut into bite size pieces
  • 1 large onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-2 bell peppers, any color, thinly sliced or cut into pieces
  • 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 large tomato, chopped
  • 1 -2 Tablespoons paprika (to your liking)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • onion powder to taste
  • dash of cayenne pepper
  • Cherry tomatoes, halved for garnish (optional)
  • Parsley, chopped for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil on medium high heat. Add chicken pieces to skillet, season with salt and pepper and onion powder. When chicken is browned, remove from skillet and set aside.
  2. Next, reduce heat to medium, add remaining tablespoon olive oil to skillet and saute onions and bell peppers, until tender. Add garlic to pan and saute for another 30 seconds.
  3. Next, add chicken broth to skillet to deglaze pan scraping any bits from the bottom using a wooden spoon.
  4. Add browned chicken, tomato, paprika, a dash of cayenne, and salt and pepper to taste to the pan and simmer covered for about 30 minutes.
  5. After chicken mixture has simmered for 30 minutes, take a few spoons full of sauce and add to sour cream in a small bowl. Stir until combined and sour cream is tempered.
  6. Add warmed sour cream to skillet and stir until mixture is nice and creamy.
  7. Simmer uncovered for about 10 minutes or until sauce has reduced and has thickened up a bit.
  8. Garnish with fresh cherry tomatoes and parsley for a little added freshness.
