Job description: Position Purpose

The Sanitarian Trainee performs and assists with routine inspections, reviews, analysis, and evaluations regarding the health and safety compliance of various projects pools, and food establishments in the community. Provides education and ensures compliance with related health and safety regulations.

Essential Functions

1 Performs inspections and monitors food establishments ensuring compliance with all food, health, and safety regulations and precautions; inspects pool and public areas to ensure they are environmentally safe and sustainable to promote public health and safety.

2 Facilitates and coordinates the process for issuing Food Establishment Permits, Mobile Food Permits, Farmers Market Permits, and Temporary Event Food Permits; reviews, checks, and ensures that all information provided and entered is correct and accurate; inspects to confirm all food establishments have a valid, current, and paid permit.

3 Interprets code regulations and educates citizens on regulations and guidelines; communicates and assists with applicants, expeditors, applicants, contractors, developers, sub-contractor’s developers, tradesmen, and owners of establishments on the development of project construction and compliance with related codes and permits.

4 Completes Food inspections and Risk assessments as assigned to meet division goals and works with registered Sanitarians to complete assignments; provides excellent customer service and provides insight, knowledge, and direction on health and safety codes, violations, and corrective actions.

5 Attends and participates in professional conference to refine knowledge base and remain up to date on current codes and regulations; develops and presents professional presentations trainees and subordinate personnel.

6 Assists with plan review of new and upcoming construction projects involving food service or bodies of water; identifies potential code compliance issues and makes necessary adjustments during planning process.

7 Reads educational and current material related environmental health and safety; initiates and performs coursework in the standardization process for inspectors and gathers certifications necessary for work assignments.

8 Performs follow up work for failing establishments, investigates complaints of citizens, and determines validity of complaint and corrective actions to take.

9 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) with at least thirty (30) college semester hours in basic applied science fields approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

LICENSE and CERTIFICATION:

  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record.
  • Must obtain registration in the state of Texas as a Sanitarian-in-Training within six (6) months after appointment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Availability to work evenings, nights, weekends and/or holidays.
  • Subject to working in rain and/or other types of inclement weather.

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.

For evaluation purposes, acceptable qualifying experience for all positions must have been in a paid capacity unless noted otherwise in the minimum qualifications for the posted position.

Additionally, 30+ hours per week will be counted as full-time employment and will receive full credit for the amount of time employed. A minimum of 15 through 29 work hours per week will be counted as part-time employment and will receive half credit for the amount of time employed.
