FAQs

The Ingredients

What are prebiotics and postbiotics, and how do they help the skin?

Prebiotics and postbiotics are nutrients that help support the skin barrier! Prebiotics are compounds that cultivate good skin bacteria, and postbiotics are vitamins for the skin that soothe redness from dehydration and replenish moisture. These are great to pair together as prebiotics feed probiotics to create postbiotics. The postbiotic used in our Avocado Cleanser formula was made to stay on the skin after being washed off, for long-lasting benefits!

What are ceramides, and how do they help the skin?

Ceramides are lipid molecules found in skin cells that help retain skin’s moisture, strengthen the skin’s barrier, and prevent moisture loss! Our Avocado Cleanser formula contains ceramides and ceramide boosters that provide long-lasting hydration and skin-soothing even post-wash.

What types of ceramides are in this formula?

Our Avocado Cleanser contains Ceramide NP and ceramide boosters Phytosteryl, Octyldodecyl, and Lauroyl Glutamate to help support a healthy skin barrier over time.

What is the skin microbiome and why is it important?

The microbiome is the environment of microorganisms that live on our skin and help to maintain moisture, nutrients, and good skin bacteria in a healthy skin barrier. A compromised skin barrier can lead to an imbalance in the microbiome and a decrease of moisture, lipids, and ceramides in the skin, which can lead to skin issues like dryness and breakouts.

How do I know if I have a compromised or damaged skin barrier?

Your skin barrier could potentially be compromised or damaged if experiencing visible redness together with dehydration and flakiness, irritation, breakouts, or a tight, dry, stripped-skin feeling. Ingredients such as ceramides and colloidal oatmeal help to strengthen and soothe the skin barrier over time!

What is a strengthened moisture barrier?

Balanced, soothed skin is a good sign of a strengthened moisture barrier! After using ceramide-rich products such as our Avocado Cleanser and Avocado Ceramide Recovery Serum, the skin should feel balanced, soft and hydrated, and experience less visible irritation, tightness, or flakiness over time.

How are these ingredients sustainably sourced?

We source ingredients with a lower environmental impact whenever possible! This formula, including avocado extract, is cold-processed rather than using heat, to help conserve energy and water. Additionally, the ceramide booster is created via fermentation, a process that does not utilize chemicals and conserves energy to break down complex ingredients into actives.

Avocado Cleanser is safe to use in any routine, however we always recommend patch testing first

How does this cleanser compare to Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser?

Our Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser is a bouncy, gel-to-foam cleanser that contains exfoliating AHA to smooth and clarify the skin while removing makeup!  Compared to our Avocado Cleanser, a lotion-to-foam skin-barrier protecting gentle cleanser, Blueberry works great on its own or as a second-cleanse step to provide a deep, exfoliating cleanse after makeup removal.

How does this cleanser compare to Papaya Sorbet Enzyme Cleansing Balm?

Our Papaya Sorbet Enzyme Cleansing Balm is a makeup-removing balm that contains papaya enzymes and seed oils to effectively dissolve and melt off makeup and SPF! It also offers the benefits of enzymatic exfoliation to leave the skin feeling soft and smooth. Compared to our Avocado Cleanser, a lotion-to-foam skin-barrier protector which can be used as an all-in-one makeup-removing and cleansing step, it is recommended to follow up with a second cleanser after using Papaya as a first cleanse.

Can I use multiple Glow Recipe cleansers in my routine?

Yes! We love double-cleansing, and our Papaya Sorbet Enzyme Cleansing Balm works great as a first cleanse with Avocado Cleanser or Blueberry Cleanser as second cleanses. You may want to alternate your cleansers depending on your skin’s needs each day, such as using Avocado Cleanser on days your skin needs extra moisture and soothing, or Blueberry Cleanser on days your skin needs some extra exfoliation.

How do I use this cleanser in a double-cleansing routine?

Although Avocado Cleanser is formulated to be a double-cleanse in one product, it works great as a second cleanse in a double-cleansing routine! Start with an oil or balm cleanser first to remove makeup and SPF, such as our Papaya Sorbet Enzyme Cleansing Balm, and follow-up with Avocado to help cleanse and soothe!
